EDMOND — The 19th-ranked Ada boys basketball team had juggernaut Kingfisher wobbly for most of their Class 4A State Tournament showdown Thursday night at Deer Creek High School.
However, the Yellowjackets absorbed some of Ada’s best shots and held the Cougars scoreless over the final 4:16 of the game to rally for a 50-45 win.
No. 1 Kingfisher has now won 33 straight games dating back to last year’s state championship run, and its quest for a repeat marches on at 27-0. The Cougars end their season at 21-8.
Ada freshman Jaxson Robinson scored on a nice drive to the basket to put the Cougars ahead 45-44, and Parks called a timeout with 4:16 to play. That was the eighth lead change of a highly competitive fourth quarter.
Kingfisher junior Trey Green, the leader of his team, put the Yellowjackets ahead 46-45 when he hit a tough bank shot at the 2:38 mark of the fourth period.
After an Ada turnover, Kingfisher’s Jett Sternberger got wide open on a backdoor cut for a layup that put his team on top 48-45.
The Cougars were forced to call time out at the 1:25 mark after Kobe Burgess got sick to his stomach standing near the Ada bench. He remained in the game.
After an Ada miss, Sternberger hit two free throws with 1:02 remaining that helped keep the Cougars at bay.
Kingfisher opened up a four-point lead after Green scored off a nice pass from Bijan Cortes that put the Yellowjackets ahead 34-39 at the 3:41 mark of the third quarter.
However, Burgess banked home a short jumper at the 1:02 mark and — after Green picked up his fourth foul on a drive to the basket with 4.8 ticks left — he swished a 3-pointer from the deer head on the Deer Creek gym floor, some 27 feet away, to put the Cougars on top 34-33 heading into the back-and-forth final period.
Burgess had a stellar outing against the stingy Kingfisher defense, finishing with a game-high 21 points — including a trio of 3-pointers — to go with five rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots.
The Yellowjackets started the game with an 8-2 run before the Cougars settled in. Ada finished the third quarter on a 13-6 spurt that put the locals ahead 15-14 heading to the second period.
The Yellowjackets led 26-20 after a Sternberger free throw at the 2:37 mark of the second quarter.
Ada got two free throws by Kylen Cooper before Robison drained a long 3-pointer with less than a minute left to cut the Kingfisher advantage to 28-25 at halftime. Robinson hit a pair of triples and scored 10 points for Ada.
Cooper scored four points and added four rebounds and a steal in his final game for the Cougars. He’s the lone senior on the basketball team.
Ada’s defense helped keep Green in check for most of the game. The Kingfisher playmaker finished with 13 points and five rebounds. Sternberger led the KHS offense with 16 points on 4-of-15 shooting to go with three steals. He also sank 7-of-9 free throws. Cortes, a freshman, also reached double figures for the Yellowjackets, adding 11 points and six rebounds.
The Yellowjackets didn’t get a single point off the bench.
Kingfisher made 15-of-18 free shots in the game, compared to a 3-of-6 outing for Ada.
The five-point margin of victory was the closest by Kingfisher, and the 50 points was the lowest scoring output by the Yellowjackets since a 60-41 win over Marlow to open the 2017-18 season.
