Ada Boys Lose To Seminole
12/25/17 -

SEMINOLE – The Class 4A 15th-ranked Ada Cougars did a great job of forcing the opportunities but couldn’t take advantage of them Tuesday night against the 14th-ranked Seminole Chieftains.

Junior Kobe Burgess collected a game-high 21 points, recorded nine steals, assisted on eight other baskets and had six rebounds for Ada, but Seminole used its considerable size advantage to claim a 65-53 victory.

“We didn’t play smart. We didn’t take care of the basketball and didn’t take good shots,” said Ada head coach Garland Parks. “We let the atmosphere and the crowd get into our heads.”

Guard Kason Clark drained 7-of-11 shots from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point territory, in finishing with 20 points. Six-foot, 7-inch Adam Nance finished with 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor and 11 rebounds for a double-double to spark Seminole.

The Chieftains, who improved to 6-1 on the season, also received 14 points from Shommario Stephens as he converted 6-of-8 field-goal tries.

Burgess was 7-of-15 from the floor, including 3-of-6 from outside the arc. Cody Smith was the only other double-figure scorer for the Cougars with 11. Starter Sam Godwin was next on the Ada scoring chart with seven points to go with six boards.

Ada, 4-3, trailed by a 37-23 margin at the 4:05 mark of the third quarter but forced a flurry of turnovers, led by Burgess, to pull within 44-41 with 30 seconds remaining in the period. Burgess assisted on five buckets during that span, converted a nifty reverse layup and executed an old-fashioned 3-point play after stealing the ball, hitting the layup and drawing the foul.

An Adam Anderson steal and bucket clipped that deficit to three. But a Jordan Rodriguez basket pushed the Seminole lead back to five at the end of the quarter.

Godwin’s reverse layup, off a Burgess assist, trimmed the deficit to 46-43 to start the fourth, but the Cougars were unable to get closer as the Chieftains went on an 8-1 run to keep Ada at bay.

“We picked up our pressure, which gave us opportunities. We just couldn’t finish. On their turnovers, you’ve got to capitalize,” Parks said.

The Cougars shot just 35 percent from the floor, while Seminole hit at a 57 percent clip. Ada totaled six 3 -pointers, and the Chieftains ended up with four. The two teams combined for 27 turnovers – 14 by the Cougars and 13 by Seminole. Despite its size disadvantage, Ada did hold a 30-27 edge in rebounds.

The Cougars are now idle until Jan. 4 when they host Ponca City in the opening round of their own East Central Oklahoma Classic at 8:30 p.m. at the Cougar Activity Center.
