Ada High’s one-girl golf team continues to improve.
Junior Lauren John shot a 96 April 1 at the Ardmore Tournament and lowered that score to a season-best 92 April 2 at Tecumseh.
“Lauren’s scores have improved, but more importantly at this stage of the season, she is improving in all areas of her game,” said Ada girls golf coach Ron Anderson.
Anderson said John battled some of the top golfers in the state at the Dornick Hills Golf Course in Ardmore.
“It’s likely the toughest field of golfers she will face until the state tournament,” he said. “Dornick Hills was in great shape, and the weather allowed for some low scores.”
Ragan Chaney won the medalist crown with a 70, while Brooklyn Bostick of Duncan and Blayne Barker of Durant both followed with 77s.
At Tecumseh, John drew Barker as a playing partner and watched her get hot and record a two-under-par 69 on the Firelake Golf Club to win that medalist crown. Barker plans to play collegiately at Oklahoma City University.
“Plainview and Durant have been on quite a roll the past several years. Both have won state championships and are sending players to play at the next level,” Anderson said.
John returned to Dornick Hills on Monday for the Plainview Tournament, where she recorded a 98. Chaney won that medalist crown with a 72, and Jade McCurdy of Purcell followed at 79.
John heads to the Lake Murray Golf Course for the Lone Grove Tournament on Friday.
“I told Lauren before season if it was going to be just you and me, we’re going to play the best courses and competition we can,” Anderson said. “Unfortunately, as with most players, her scores will begin to level off a bit depending on the course we play. So beginning now until regionals and hopefully state, decisions on the course matter most.”
