OKLAHOMA CITY – Ada’s move up to Class 5A from 4A was a rough one for the Lady Cougars last weekend in the State Tennis Tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

Ada’s best finish was sixth place at No. 2 Doubles, as the combination of Ella Summers and Maggie Summers went 3-2 in the tournament.

The Summers combo opened play on Friday with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Pryor’s Gordon and Hammock in the opening round. But Tulsa Bishop Kelley’s Gray and Bailey Wollmershauser downed the Summers duo, 6-2, 6-0 later in the day.

On Saturday, Summers and Summers registered a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Ardmore’s Makalia Barber and Makila Case. The Summers duo then beat Oklahoma Bible’s Gungoll and Hopkins, 6-2, 6-2 in the consolation semifinals. Altus’ Faith Biddlecam and Kaileigh Weaver upended Summers and Summers, 6-1, 6-3 in the consolation finals for fifth place.

The Lady Cougars’ No. 1 Doubles team of Ally Hawkins and Lauryn Hawkins went 1-2 in the tournament. Heritage Hall’s Phoebe Shapard and Ryan Thompson downed the Hawkins duo, 6-0, 6-0 on Friday. The Hawkins combo bounced back for a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Pryor’s Jillian Gore and Myranda Masters, 7-5, 6-2, also on Friday. Then on Saturday, Tulsa Booker T. Washington’s Hubner and Victoria Nunez downed the Hawkins duo, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

At No. 2 Singles, Ada’s Makayla Freeman also finished 1-2. On Friday, Collinsville’s Mackenzie Scott was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Freeman. Later in the day, Freeman rebounded for a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Lawton MacArthur’s Elisa Murillo. However, on Saturday Claremore’s Lauren Kuykendall registered a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Freeman.

Ada’s Maggie Johnson dropped both of her No. 1 Singles matches at state on Friday to Heritage Hall’s Brooke Thompson, 6-0, 6-0, and Tulsa Edison Prep’s Libby Benedict, 6-2, 6-3 and was eliminated.

Ada finished 11th as a team. Heritage Hall won the 5A state championship with 34 points, while Cascia Hall was next with 27.
