MCALESTER — The Ada Lady Cougars stayed within striking distance of rival McAlester the entire contest but could never pull ahead in a 47-40 loss to the Lady Buffaloes Tuesday night inside the Bob Brumley Gymnasium.
Ada fell to 6-12 on the year, while McAlester (No. 20 in Class 5A) improved to 9-10. The Lady Buffaloes won the season series 2-1. Ada defeated McAlester 44-38 at the East Central Oklahoma Classic and dropped a 42-37 overtime decision to the Lady Buffs in a regular-season game earlier this month inside the Cougar Activity Center.
Ada fell into an early 9-3 hole and still trailed 13-6 after a putback by McAlester post player Bren Cable at the 4:01 mark of the second period.
The Lady Cougars rallied with an 8-2 run to end the second quarter and get within 15-14 at halftime.
During that stretch, Ada got five points from Kaley Watkins — who returned to the AHS starting lineup after missing several games with illness — and a 3-pointer from Kortni McNutt and two late free shots by Madalyn Jaques.
McAlester’s Erin Kelley tried to shoot Ada out of the game in the third period. She sank three 3-pointers during a 12-2 MSH surge to start the second half. Two free throws by Tayrn Howard put the hosts on top 27-16 at the 3:29 mark of the third quarter.
The Lady Buffaloes still led by 10 heading into the fourth quarter, but again Ada made another run to get close.
Dixie Redman started the final period with a free throw before Landon Owens scored five straight points for the Lady Cougars. She knocked down a tough shot in traffic (she was fouled, but missed a free shot) before sinking a jumper and hitting a free throw to get the visitors within 33-29 at the 6:06 mark.
Lillie Speed nailed a 3-point basket at the 3:29 mark to help Ada creep within 36-32, and Alex Hamilton scored on a drive to the basket with just under three minutes left to make it 38-34.
McAlester finally put Ada away with an 8-0 run that pushed the MHS advantage to 46-24 with 35.4 ticks left.
Owens scored nine points and had six rebounds to lead the Lady Cougars. Watkins followed with eight points, while Jaques contributed five.
Kelley and Howard scored 13 points each to pace the Lady Buffaloes.
Ada travels to Durant Friday night.
