Ada girls clamp down on Durant
01/18/18 -

The Ada Lady Cougars pitched a first-quarter shutout en route to a 34-18 win over Durant Tuesday night inside the Cougar Activity Center.

The Lady Cougars snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 5-8 on the year, while Durant left town at 2-11.

The Lady Lions went 0-for-4 from the field and had nine turnovers in the scoreless first quarter.

Madi Keel hit a 3-pointer for Durant to open the second quarter, but the Lady Cougars used a 13-0 burst to push their lead to 21-3 and the rout was on. A Lillie Speed 3-pointer got that run started. Kaley Watkins and Landyn Owens then scored four points each before Kortni McNutt sank two free throws at the 1:38 mark to end the AHS volley.

Ada led 21-7 at halftime, limiting Durant to 2-of-11 shooting (18.1 percent) through two quarters.

“We played pretty good on defense. We switched it up and ran a bunch of different stuff,” said Ada head coach Christie Jennings.

Ada was coming off a lopsided loss to Class 4A No. 4 Ardmore, and Jennings was happy to see her team get back on the winning track.

“Ardmore is probably the best team we’ve played all year and we’ve played some good teams. We bounced back today ... and we got to play everyone, which is always good on a tournament week because you don’t want to wear their legs out,” she said.

Owens scored 11 points to lead Ada, while Mikayla Emarthle added seven points and five rebounds. Watkins scored four points and had six rebounds and five steals.

Ada forced 25 Durant turnovers but ended with 19 miscues of its own.

“We’re still turning the ball over way too much. We have to get a handle on that, or we won’t beat a good team,” Jennings said.

Durant got five points, six rebounds and four steals from Annalee Jones.

Ada matches up with Class 4A No. 17 Blanchard at 4 p.m. today in the first round of the 2018 “Sweet Pea” Tournament in Newcastle.

“Blanchard’s really good. Regardless of how that game goes, we match up with Elgin (ranked No. 7), who is one of the best in 4A or Chickasha,” Jennings said. “We, like every team we’ve ever had, just want to go try to get two wins. If you can go get two wins in a three-day tournament like that one, you feel pretty good about it.”

Other ranked teams at Newcastle include Class 4A No. 14 Newcastle and Class 5A No. 6 Lawton MacArthur.
