The Ada High track team wrapped up its 2016 season at the Class 5A State Tournament last weekend at Moore High School.

The Cougars were led by the boys 4x200 Meter Relay team, which finished fifth in a time of 1:31.29. Included in that foursome were Sheldon Hysten, Levi Grimes, Kylen Cooper and Avery Logan.

Ada’s 4x400 Relay team finished 11th in 3:33.95. That group was hampered when Logan, its fastest runner, had to drop out due to a medical issue.

Ada’s 4x100 team was hampered when Shiloh Windsor pulled a muscle during the race itself.

Entering the state tournament, Ada’s 4x200 relay team was projected to finish ninth (as was the 4x200 squad) but improved to its fifth-place showing.

“I was very pleased with how our kids approached the meet. We went up there and got after it and beat some people that maybe we weren’t supposed to beat,” said Ada boys track coach Mart Leming. “Our relay teams had something to prove. We felt like we had a chance to medal in the 4x1 and 4x2, and we were able to do that in the 4x2.”

In other boys results, Logan was 12th in the high jump at 5-10, Micah Hutchins was 14th in the shot put at 42-09 and Jake Martinez was 15th in the 100 Meter Dash.

In girls action, Ada’s McKenah Jones was eighth in the 400 Meter Dash in 1:01.92, and Payton Taylor was 10th in the high jump at 5-0.

Leming said his team had to fight the injury bug throughout the season.

“We battled a lot of adversity this spring. We had some injuries we had to deal with. But for the most part, I thought our kids had a good attitude and work ethic,” he said.

Leming and Ada High soccer coach Cole Jones shared a few male athletes this spring.

“I’m thankful (athletic director) Mike Anderson allowed us to do that. Coach Jones was great to work with. We tried to help each other and accommodate each other throughout the season as far as games and track meets,” Leming explained. “It definitely made the soccer team better and track team better by having a couple of guys help out in both of those sports.”

Leming also welcomed new faces into the track fold.

“We had a few guys come out that hadn’t come out before. That was beneficial,” he said.

The first-year coach said he believes the future is bright for his track program.

“Overall, I think we had a really good year. We have a lot of kids fired up about next year because we have a lot of guys coming back,” he said. “We have some good seniors we’re going to have to replace, but we feel like we have a chance to do that.”
