OKLAHOMA CITY — The Ada High boys golf team fired a 308 and finished in second place Thursday at the Del City Invitational held Thursday at the Trosper Park Golf Course.
Piedmont (No. 12 in Class 5A) won the tournament title with a 299. Holand Hall was third with a 310, while the Sulphur Bulldogs were a stroke back at 311. Kingfisher settled for fifth place with a 314.
“I thought we played really well today,” said Ada head coach Robbie Powell. “It was a little bit cold, but the wind was light and the golf course was in good shape, so there was no reason not to play well today.”
Max Roberts led the Cougar charge with a score of 69, one stroke off the top medalist round. Hunter Oden and Will Craig, both of Piedmont, had identical scores of 68. Garrett Murphy of Putnam City North finished fourth at 74, while Dillon Burns of Kingfisher was fifth at 75.
“Max was outstanding finishing third individually,” Powell said.
Matthew Brown and Ross Keep both shot 78s for the Cougars.
“Ross and Matthew played well too,” Powell said. “We continue to get better.”
Rounding out the Ada scores were Aiden Plumlee with an 83 and Ryan Hagar with an 84.
“We still have to cut down on the mental mistakes that are costing us the five or six shots that we need to save to compete for a title this year,” Powell said. “They continue to work at those things, and I expect the improvement to continue.”
The Cougars — ranked No. 2 in Class 4A behind Heritage Hall — are back in action Monday at the Ardmore Invitational hosted by the Dornick Hills Golf Course. That will be Ada’s last tournament before the Class 4A Regional Tournament scheduled for April 30 at the Jimmie Austin Golf Course in Seminole.
Joining Ada in the Seminole regional include the host Chieftains, Broken Bow, Ft. Gibson, Hilldale, Metro Christian, Muldrow, Sallisaw and Wagoner.
