WEWOKA — The Ada High School boys golf team kicked off its 2018 season by winning the Wewoka Invitational Tuesday at the Gil Morgan Golf Course.
Ada finished with a team total of 327 and finished well ahead of host Wewoka, which was second at 346. Beggs was third at 356, and Victory Christian was fourth at 366.
The Coalgate Wildcats were also in the field, finishing seventh at 442.
“I am pretty happy with today’s performance. Anytime I get a result in the 320’s the first tournament of the year I am satisfied,” said Ada head coach Robbie Powell.
Ada junior Max Roberts, who transferred to Ada last year, from Latta, finished with a score of 71 to win the medalist race. Jace Weatherly of Wewoka was second at 76, while Wesley Sikes of Okemah was third at 77. Rounding out the top five were Cole Trahan of Tecumseh at 78 and Evan Stafford of Wewoka at 80.
“Max was outstanding in his first performance as a Cougar,” Powell said.
Matthew Brown carded an 84 for Ada, and Aiden Plumlee was a stroke back at 85. Ryan Hagar scored an 87, while Ross Kemp registered a 90.
“Aiden Plumlee also performed better than I expected in his first varsity tournament,” Powell said.
The veteran Ada coach said the initial tournament showed his team what it needed to work on this spring.
“We really need to improve in the short game area before we go up against a stronger field. The weather has not allowed us to practice as much as I would like, so I knew play around the greens would be a little weak,” Powell said. “We will get some good work in before our next tournament.”
The Cougars get a break before returning to action March 29 at the Carl Albert Invitational. That tournament will be hosted by the John Conrad Municipal Golf Course in Midwest City.
