PLAINVIEW – The Ada Cougars outhit Plainview 11-10 but committed three errors and surrendered four unearned runs in dropping a 10-8 decision to the host Indians Monday night.
Plainview tallied three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning which proved to be the difference.
Jerrett Ellis and Jackson McFarlane sparked the Ada offense with three hits each. Ellis went 3-for-5 with two doubles, six runs batted in and one run scored. McFarlane was 3-for-4 with a double, scored three times and drew a walk. Trel Moore also finished 2-for-4 in a losing cause.
Reliever Tovan Thomsen suffered the loss, despite giving up only one earned run off five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.
The Cougars’ initial run came in the first as McFarlane scored on an error off a hard ground ball hit by Ellis.
After Plainview tallied three in the bottom half of the first, Ada had its most productive inning in the second. A Jalen Graham leadoff single to center got things rolling. Bo Charboneau then drew a walk and McFarlane singled to center to load up the bases.
One out later, Ellis smacked a three-run double to center. After Moore reached on an error and moved Ellis over to third, Patrick Tims doubled Ellis home for a 5-3 Cougar advantage.
The Indians then pushed four across the plate in the second for a 7-5 Plainview lead.
Ada then pulled within 7-6 in the third when Christian Maloy drew a one-out walk and scored off Ellis’ second double.
The Cougars later tallied two in the fifth for an 8-7 lead with Ellis delivering a run-scoring single to bring home McFarlane, who led off the inning with an infield single. An RBI groundout by Tims later in the inning plated Maloy, who reached base after being hit by a pitch.
Ada meets Pauls Valley at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Heart of Oklahoma Tournament in Purcell. That event, that continues through Saturday, also includes teams from host Purcell, Newcastle, Lexington, Bridge Creek, Washington and Bethel.
