SULPHUR – Manny LaValley tossed a five-inning, two-hit shutout as the Ada Cougars staged a 10-run third inning in pulling away for an 11-0 rout of the Sulphur Bulldogs on Thursday.
The contest was a makeup game from a rainout earlier this spring.
Ada improved to 15-9 on the season overall and 6-4 in District 4A-3 play.
LaValley struck out five and surrendered no walks.
Four Cougars – Trel Moore, Patrick Tims, Jackson McFarlane and Hunter Conklin — each went 2-for-3 from the plate to spark Ada’s 11-hit assault.
Jerrett Ellis finished 1-for-2, drove home three runs with a double and drew one walk for Ada. Teammates Jalen Graham and Bo Charboneau were each 1-for-3, and Graham knocked in two runs while Charboneau picked up one RBI and scored once.
Graham’s groundout to second base scored Moore for the lone tally of the second inning.
Then came the 10-run explosion in the third, highlighted by Ellis’ three-run double and Graham’s two-run single. Moore, Tims and Charbonea each had a run-scoring single in the frame as well. The other two runs in the inning came directly off errors.
Sulphur’s only hits came from Josh Watterson and Logan Smith, who were each 1-for-2.
Dawson Muck suffered the pitching loss.
Ada travels to Plainview at 4:30 p.m. Monday and then hosts the Indians at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in a pair of District 4A-3 contests.
