The Ada Cougars jumped on the Sulphur Bulldogs with five first-inning runs and cruised to a 6-2 victory in 4 ½ innings Monday before the rain hit.
The second game of the scheduled twinbill was washed out, and no makeup day had been announced as of press time. The win improved Ada to 9-5 overall and 5-2 in District 4A-3.
Jackson McFarlane pitched a four-hitter, and Jerrett Ellis went 2-for-3 from the plate with a pair of doubles, two runs batted in and a run scored.
McFarlane, who worked all five innings from the mound, struck out two and allowed no walks as both Sulphur runs were unearned.
Ada totaled six hits as Bo Charbonoeau and Hunter Conklin were each 1-for-2 with one RBI. One of Charboneau’s hits went for a double. Teammate Patrick Tims was 1-for-3 with one RBI and a run scored, and McFarlane went 1-for-3 and scored once.
Taigen White drove in a run in a 2-for-3 effort for the Bulldogs, while Logan Smith (1-for-1 with a run scored) and Dawson Muck (1-for-3 with a run scored) accounted for the other Sulphur hits.
Muck took the pitching loss as he struck out three and walked three. Of the five runs Muck surrendered, three were earned.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the first as Muck scored off an error.
Then came the five-run explosion by the Cougars. McFarlane’s leadoff single to right field got things rolling. Christian Maloy then drew a walk to set the stage for Ellis’ two-run double to center field. After Ellis advanced to third on a Trel Moore groundout, Tims delivered a run-scoring single to center, making it 3-1.
Conklin’s RBI single to right field scored Moore for a 4-1 Ada advantage, and Tims ultimately scored off an error off a ball hit by Charboneau.
Sulphur clipped the deficit to 5-2 on White’s run-scoring single to Smith, who reached base after being hit by a pitch, moved up to second on a passed ball and reached third on Muck’s groundout.
The Cougars then closed out the scoring in the bottom of the third off Charboneau’s double to left, scoring Jalen Graham, who got on with a walk.
The Cougars travel to the Little Axe Tournament with a pair of games Thursday evening. Ada meets Christian Heritage Academy at 6 p.m. and battles Noble at 8:15 p.m.
