PAULS VALLEY — It’s been good to have junior Torri Bray back in the Ada High softball lineup.
Bray and teammate Avery Brown had RBI hits in the bottom of the sixth inning, and Ada hung on to a 2-1 win over host Pauls Valley in a Thursday night festival.
The Lady Cougars also dropped an 8-5 loss to Lindsay during the three-way action. However, first-year head coach Taylor Canida-Henry saw her team reach double-digit victories and improve to 10-13 on the season.
“That was a huge milestone this year for the program,” Canida-Henry said.
“My kids have learned how to fight and finish games this year,” she continued. “They have learned how to win again. I’m so proud I can hardly stand it. They’ve bought into what I’m teaching and work their tails off.”
Bray, who injured her wrist during play at the Roff Tournament earlier this year and missed a handful of games, slapped an RBI double. It was the only extra-base hit of the game for the Lady Cougars.
Ada pitcher Alyssa Colungo surrendered an RBI hit to Logan Martin of Pauls Valley in the seventh before slamming the door on the victory. The Lady Panthers fell to 10-16 on the year. Colungo struck out four and walked just one in the complete-game effort.
“Colungo threw an absolutely great game,” Canida-Henry said.
Amaya Frizell (1-3), Daryn Allison (1-2) and Makenzi Marion (1-3) also had hits for Ada.
Tricia Hines led Pauls Valley (10-16), going 2-for-3 with a double.
Ada is now 3-6 in District 4A-3 action, two games behind both Plainview and Byng for fourth place. Lone Grove is 10-1, Sulphur is 8-2 and Byng and Plainview are both 5-4.
Canida-Henry also said the AHS defense was solid against Pauls Valley.
“Avery made a great catch in the fifth inning with the bases loaded to keep them from scoring,” she said.
Lindsay 8, Ada 5
Ada trailed 7-2 before closing the gap to 7-5 with a three-run burst in the bottom of the fifth inning but couldn’t get closer.
Torri Bray finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for Ada, while Madison Wilson went 1-for-2 and knocked in a run. Kaley Watkins also had a hit and an RBI, while Avery Brown finished 1-for-2.
Freshman Amaya Frizell hit a sacrifice fly that knocked in a run for Ada.
Addyson Shelton led Lindsay’s charge, going 4-for-4 with a triple and a double. Abbee Allison finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Morgan Robison went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
The Lady Cougars host Plainview at 5 p.m. Monday.
